I would be very
pleased to hear from anyone with information regarding possible
SOE activities at Roughwood Park Chalfont St. Peter. The only information
I have managed to find is that Roughwood was training school No:42
under the command of Maj. V.E. Blomfeld. Can anyone help?

experience in sailing caiques.

Hello again Mr.
Banner,
I have managed to calm down a bit since my first shock of having seen your reply
to my posting, and have worked out why I had not checked it previously (I was
hoping the direct e-mail would produce results). Given the possibly slightly
over-excited nature of my previous e-mails I thought I had better explain myself.
I am by profession a Merchant Navy Chief Officer, now retired on medical grounds(Diabetes!).
I came across the Levant Schooner Flotilla some 4 years ago, and became completely
engrossed. After a few years of research, which took me to the National Archive
at Kew, the funeral of Adrian Seligman (the founder of LSF) and lunch at the
Special Forces Club with surviving members of LSF - I decided to write a book
about it. This has grown to encompass all the organisations using caiques and
schooners in that theatre. LSF was born of the para-naval section of SOE, which
was itself born of the caiques being run (in 1939/40)by Section (D), M.I.(R).
and other odds and sods. It became apparent in 1943 that there was need for a
more aggressive and separate naval party than SOE was providing, so the fleet
was divided up into the Levant Fishing Patrol (for SOE ops) and the Levant Schooner
Flotilla, used for transporting the likes of the SAS, SBS, LRDG and the Greek
Sacred Squadron. They were eventually re-titled the Anglo-Hellenic Schooner Flotilla,
and the fleet was increased into 2 flotillas, the 1st and 2nd AHSF. In 1945 they
were handed over to the Greek Navy.
These men epitomise the essence of British Naval daring and buccaneering - they
are my heroes, and I am hoping to produce a work that will do them justice, and
bring them all into the public awareness - my way of saying thank you to that
generation.
So you see, your archives and artefacts have a huge importance and significance
to me, and would greatly help me in my research (many of the records were destroyed,
and few were kept in the first place).
I can point you towards other sources of material also, if you are interested,
and would certainly supply you with a draft copy of my book when it is ready.
The title is "Blackbeard Flotillas"c.
I do hope you are able to help me. I look forward to hearing from you. Many thanks,
Robert Hall.

Having noted
your post, I thought I'd drop a line: I am researching the WWII
service of John Lawrence DOODY, ex-Palestine Police. I suspect
that he served for a time with the Levant Schooner Flotilla (he
wrote a book titled "The Burning Coast" in which he refers to operating
caiques in the Dodecanese, but doesn't mention the unit). Are you
aware of any sources which could confirm this? Thanks in advance!

PhD student researches French resistance and Special Operations |

I am in the third year
of a part time PhD entitled 'The Women of Special Operations Executive
F section - the myth and reality'. My research is primarily based
on oral history and I have conducted several interviews with veterans,
including SOE agents, RAF pilots, SOE historians and others who were
involved in the SOE or French resistance. I am also utilising several
archives including those held at the Imperial War Museum, National
Archives and First Aid Nursing Yeomanry.
My studies have led me on trips all over the UK, most recently to a veterans
re-union in Chichester and Beaulieau Park, in addition to a visit to France
where I have visited some prominent sites including the Valencay F section
memorial and Blois Museum of resistance and deportation.
The aim of the thesis is to establish women's role in wartime Britain and
to examine what made the women of SOE F section unique. I will examine
recruitment, training methods, work in the field and relationships between
agents. I will also examine the post war image of female SOE F section
agents and to assess it against the actual archive material, the main case
studies for this will be the three GC recipients: Odette Churchill, Violette
Szabo and Noor Inayat Khan. Films to be examined include Charlotte Grey,
Odette, Carve her name with Pride and Plenty, as well as many works of
fiction.
If anyone has any details that may assist my research or any comments about
my PhD research, please get in touch |

I have been reading
a lot about the women of SOE lately and found that I needed a list
of names and code names etc. to put the scale of the operations into
perspective(and this is just for the women)and help to 'flesh out'
the less well known.
I have made this list for my own information mainly but would be
pleased to forward this to you (I could send a Word document or a
PDF as you prefer)if you think it may be useful. |

I have been researching
lesser known women in soe. One lady I have had trouble finding is
mme. Jeanne Henne,a girl from Belgium. Her medals came up for auction
some time ago,and there were a lot of them. I contacted the auction
house and got nowhere. She was on the Animasse? line. The hunt continues. |

I am doing my
leaving cert history project on Violette Szabo and am finding it
very hard to find any reliable sources. Do you have any idea where
i might find sources on her missions or her captivity? I have the
Violette Szabo book:"The Life That i Have" but need a lot more
sources that deal solely with Violette. I would appreciate any
help. |
