Lieutenant Desmond
F. Earley, Essex Regiment
Lieutenant Desmond Earley of the Essex Regiment served as a member
of the second Chindit force in 1944 when the Japanese were making their
final assault on India from their position in Burma.
Sir Denis Forman
Kt OBE
Sir Denis Forman Kt OBE was a Major in the 6th Royal West
Kents during the Italian campaign, where he, and Lionel Wigram, had
the opportunity to test the battle theories they had devised. They
fought alongside the Partisans and Forman lost a lower leg during fighting
at Monte Cassino.
Private Ronald Hopper
Ron Hopper joined the RASC on 1st September 1939, sent to join the
BEF four months later. He was evacuated from Dunkirk and later served
in Cyprus, Palestine, Iraq and North Africa where he was captured
by the Afrika Corps. There followed periods as a POW in Italy and
Germany when light relief was provided from the arduous work in a
mining camp by his involvement with 'The Moles' entertainment group.
Gunner Maurice Naylor,
CBE
Gunner Maurice Naylor witnessed the fall of Singapore and spent years
of captivity in Japanese POW camps in Thailand.
Corporal Peter Peel
Wounded and captured while serving with the 2nd Battalion
York & Lancaster Regiment in Crete, Peter began his POW life working
in a quarry in Silesia but managed to be re-allocated a job as a teacher
and designer, painter and actor in the repertory theatre.
Signalman Harry Read
Signalman Harry Read was among the 6th Airborne Division
and landed in Normandy on 6 June 1944.
Major John Smale
Major John Smale joined No 3 Commando after returning from Dunkirk. He
served on the raids on Guernsey and the Lofoten Islands but was captured at
Dieppe. At Eichstatt Prisoner of War Camp, he joined the escape committee
and worked as a tunneller.
Cpl Geoff Steer 1/4th KOYLI
Geoff trained for D-Day, was taken prisoner in Holland and endured
forced labour and the long march.
Captain Denis Swinney
Denis Swinney was a Captain with the Royal Engineers who served as
part of the British Expeditionary Force in France and then in North
Africa where he was taken Prisoner and held in Italy and Germany.
Staff Sergeant Leonard
Wright
Len Wright was a Glider Pilot who took part in the D-Day landings,
Arnhem and the crossing of the Rhine.
