The Centre holds some important images of the key figures of the Second World War, both while undertaking official duties and in off-guard, more private moments. These pages are devoted to these various personalities and the diverse roles they played during this important conflict.

Key Figures of D-Day
To commemorate the 60th Anniversary, six of the personalities associated with D-Day are illustrated with photographs from the archive of the Second World War Experience Centre.

Major General Orde Wingate 1903 - 1944
Orde Charles Wingate was a brilliant but controversial figure. His unorthodox leadership and achievements during the Second World War created a legend in military history, and was the subject of Trevor Royle's lecture for the Second World War Experience Centre at the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh, 2002.

Company Sergeant Major Stanley Elton Hollis VC
Company Sergeant Major Stan Hollis was awarded the only Victoria Cross for bravery in Normandy on 6 June 1944. He later described his experiences on D-Day to students of the Staff College at Camberley.
