1942

February: The fall of Singapore. Lt General Percival surrenders unconditionally to Lt General Yamashita. 130,000 POWs taken.
March: St Nazaire Raid. HMS Campbeltown rams dock gates while Commandos sabotage dock machinery.

8th March The Japanese invade Java and take over the family home of Anna Golesworthy

12th April Celia, as a young child, witnesses her home in Burma ablaze after a Japanese aerial attack.

May: Heydrich, Deputy Reich 'protector' of Bohemia assassinated by Czech agents in Prague. The first 'Thousand Bomber' Raid on Cologne, followed by similar operations to Essen and the Ruhr.
June: The Battle of Midway. Japanese Combined Fleet attempts to trap US Pacific Fleet in Midway Atoll. All four Japanese carriers are lost. In North Africa, the Afrika Korps captures Tobruk after battles on Gazala Line.

19th June Wren Penny Martin aboard RMS Aquitania, approaches the Cape of Good Hope during her journey to serve overseas.

August: Dieppe Raid. Canadian and other Allied troops carry out landing but suffer heavy casualties. Malta is re-supplied after Operation Pedestal.

25th August The German crew who capture David Wilson, hand him over to the Japanese as a prisoner of war.

November: Allied victory at El Alamein after sustained fighting. Allied Expeditionary Force lands in Algiers and Oran as part of Operation Torch.

8th November 1942 This is the only occasion that Stanley Hope's Mosquito is fired at. The Mosquito was so fast that it gave the enemy no chance to successfully attack it.
